Hickory Hill Farm Spring 2010 Newsletter
April-May-June
What a crazy last 6 months it has been around here. Two months of which John spent in the hospital (two separate times) with a rare fungal infection in his bone marrow. The hospital stays required home rest of the same amount of time, however things look to be getting back to normal now though. Wiley having a couple eye surgeries and a new grandson added to the Finley family.
As a result of being short handed we weren't able to consign to the Legends of the Fall, Stocking Stuffer, Kentucky Beef Expo, or Southeast" Grasstime" sales as we usually do. Therefore, leaving us with a year's worth of really nice ET, AI, and natural heifer calves. We plan to retain some of these heifers as well as offer some as bred heifers this fall in the "Legends of the Fall". The group will include calves by Ter Ron Fully Loaded, UBAR High Capacity, 5L Norseman King, UBAR Sequoia, Six Mile Sakic, Brylor Pasquale, Advancer 9088, 4L Super Vision, along with natural calves by Solution.
The fall '09 calves are here and the spring '10 calves are coming as we type. Many of these calves will be ETs and AI calves from some of our elite donors and both proven and up and coming sires. We will have some Solution calves and the first progeny of our new herd sire Brylor Legacy as well. Look for these calves this fall in the show string and some sales. We plan to attend the TN State Fair and Mid South Fairs along with consignments to the "Red Angus of the Ozarks", "Legends of the Fall" and "Stocking Stuffer" sales.
Several donors will be working in the donor barn this spring including; Copperlass 2111, Blockanna 718, Copperlass 406, Blockanna 678S, Tyra, Stony, Tidy Bee, Dina, and Rebella.. Plans are to implant 50-60 embryos this spring from these matings, as we are reducing the fall calving herd and increasing the springs. Some bad news in the donor herd is the unfortunate loss of our Copperqueen 107 donor this spring. She was the foundation of our Copperqueen family and a direct daughter of Coppertop 591.
As usual things are busy around the farm but we always have time to talk and look at cows!
Sincerely,
The Hickory Hill Farm crew
